What Do You Want in a Job?
January 25, 2008 – 9:24 pmGood question isn’t it? Obviously, for me, and probably a lot of other people the gut response to that question is lots of money! After all, the more money you have, the better your life will be, right?
Won’t it?
Perhaps… But if you stop and consider it, what do you really want from a job. Is it really just money — or is it, like I’d probably say, being well paid AND … then list some other desires.
According to this Fast Company article, Top Jobs 2008: 10 Jobs You Didn’t Know You Wanted, there are more things you should think about than just money when looking for that next job or a career change.
Don’t get me wrong, not getting paid enough is a killer. I was. Despite how much you like what you are doing, and how much fun you have, if you can’t pay for housing or to get to work each week, your in bad shape! And if you are just making it, then how will you ever update the wardrobe (which will wear out!) or replace your car, or other things that break? So money, yeah, is important!
There is more out there, and you should think about them:
- Creativity - Do you desire to have an outlet for your creative abilities?
- Community - Do you want to give back to your community?
- Fulfillment - Want a sense of satisfaction and fulfillment from your job?
- Respect - Need to be respected and treated well?
- Work Style - Want or need to work independently?
The article talks about several jobs that you may not have thought of that offer a lot of very appealing things. And they don’t pay bad. It also gives you basic ideas about how to go and get one of these jobs!
Some of them, like brewmastering, isn’t for everyone, but surely you’d get a kick out of designing roller coasters!
